In this lesson, we will compare the top-selling ICE sedan in the world, the Toyota Camry, to the Tesla's Model 3.
Here is a listing of the various Camry trims at an average price of $34,012 across the different makes.
As the production line ramps up, the prices for the Model 3 will come down. However, today's new car price is ~$35,770. This price is very close to the older model 3 price point despite the mindblowing increase in features and functions.
I will use the average price for the Toyota Camry at $34,012 to compare it against the slightly more expensive Model 3 at $35,770. In the U.S., you would also have a $7,500 federal credit and a state credit when purchasing the Model 3, bringing it down to the lowest trim of the Camry.
It has a sleek, smaller grill with nicer lines towards the bottom. Much of this is designed not for aesthetics but for aerodynamics.
Many are comparing this new design to the Aston Martin Vantage, which is also a beautiful car in terms of the nose design. Hopefully, it proves to be a little Aston Martin-esque.
The back has not changed dramatically. The lights rise with the trunk, making the trunk massive.
The interior comes with a very minimalist dash design. If you compare this to the inside of a Lamborghini, it is the furthest thing you can imagine. The inputs are two toggle switches on the steering wheel, and you now indicate with your left thumb.
For the passengers in the back, a rear infotainment system has been added for watching videos and playing video games.
The Tesla Model 3 has a drag coefficient of 0.219, making it the most aerodynamic Tesla ever made. The Toyota Camry has a drag coefficient of 0.289.
The Camry's top model has 7 speakers, while the Model 3 comes standard with 17 speakers.
The base Model 3 has a range of 267 miles, which is 11.74% less than the Camry's gasoline-powered engine.
The long-range Model 3 has a range of 358 miles, which is the same as the Camry's hybrid engine.
The Model 3 has a trunk size of 600 liters, which is much larger than the Camry's trunk size of 371 liters.
Tesla added 12% more mileage just because of the aerodynamic redesign and the reduced weight of the car.
I am curious to know how Tesla has been able to add so many features and technologies to its cars while still keeping the prices relatively affordable. The Toyota Camry, on the other hand, has not changed much in recent years.
As a consumer, you receive so much more in terms of features and functionality with a price point that is so low.
You can charge a laptop with the 65W USB-C charger. The ability to take calls or conduct conference calls in the vehicles is greatly improved. A new speaker bar added to the roof is unheard of in these makes and models.
According to Ark Invest, if Tesla cuts the price of a Model in half, the total addressable market for the car will increase by 16.6 times. When factoring in government incentives, the Model 3 could be priced as low as $25,000. This is why I am so excited about the Tesla Project Highland Model 3. It can potentially be a game-changer in the automotive industry, making electric cars more affordable than ever before. Oh, and Tesla have model 2 coming soon!
